The Mouse and the Bell

Bea the mouse found a tiny silver bell at the summer fair. It made the sweetest sound, so she tied it to the ribbon on her basket.

That evening, Bea invited her friends to share strawberries beneath the old apple tree. She set out little bowls and waited. But the grass had grown tall, and her friends wandered past the tree without seeing her.

Bea climbed onto a low branch and rang her bell. Ting, ting! First came the hedgehog. Then came the sparrow, and finally the shy little frog from the pond.

They ate strawberries while the sky turned pink. When it was time to go, the frog asked Bea to ring the bell once more.

Its small clear note floated across the garden. To Bea, it sounded just like an invitation to meet again tomorrow.
